Achieve Pain-Free Biking with a Bike Fit Physical Therapy Session

Publish Date: Wed, May 24, 2017 - 10:58:00

By Anna Perry, Senior PT/Orthopedic Clinical Specialist

Biking is an excellent form of exercise whether you’re just riding around the neighborhood, hitting the trails or training for a triathlon.

But before you get started, you need to get your bike properly adjusted to fit your body. If you don’t, you may start to experience pain or numbness and this could lead to many problems later down the road. That is where Bike Fit Physical Therapy comes in.

Everyone is built a little bit different. Different heights, weights, sizes and lengths. When looking for a bike you will need a bike that will cater to your specific body type. Never force your body to fit an old bike that does not size up to your body anymore because you may start to experience discomfort while riding. This is especially for those with orthopedic problems such as back/neck, hip replacements or carpal tunnel syndrome.

Sometimes solutions can be something as simple as moving your seat up or down or adjusting the handlebars. But, in some cases buying a new bike that fits your body could be the best option. This way you can insure that the bike geometry will fit your body perfectly. Any bike store can help you with figuring all of this out, but the problem is rarely confined to just the bike. Usually the body is also part of the cause leading to types of knee, lower back and neck pain or numbness. That is where Bike Fit Physical Therapy can help find a solution for you.

Many people assume if you’re riding a bike, it is supposed to hurt. But when hurt turns into pain and numbness these are not normal symptoms. This can be caused by a multitude of different things ranging from poor flexibility, poor form or a bike that isn’t fitted properly to your body.

A Bike Physical Therapist will take the condition of your bike and your body into account when working to properly alleviate and eliminate pain and numbness you are experiencing. Plus, unlike a bike shop which makes money by selling extra merchandise, a physical therapist won’t recommend anything you won’t really need. So, if your physical therapist recommends a new seat or different bike adjustment, then chances are you will actually need one.

Bike Fit is different than regular physical therapy in its structure. Often time’s patients have just one or two Bike Fit sessions. However patients can continue on if other issues are still a problem, such as knee pain.

Anna (Wilhelm) Perry, PT, DPT, OCS, located in our Davenport, IA - Five Points clinic, has been biking for more than 10 years. She started biking as a way to get to class in college and now goes on bike tours around the country. She is also certified as a Silver Level Bike physical therapist by BikePT in Kenmore, Washington. To make an appointment with Anna, call our office at 563-324-2263 or request an appointment online.
