Low-Impact Aquatic Therapy Environment Delivers Impressive Results

Publish Date: Wed, October 04, 2017 - 12:08:00

Becky Burke—PT, DPT

When it comes to pain treatment, aquatic therapy is taking a dive into first place—and for good reason. Great for individuals with severe arthritis or for those recovering from knee surgery, aquatic therapy allows individuals to receive treatment in a strain-free environment.  Thanks to the buoyancy of water, individuals can increase their body’s mobility and overall function by performing tasks underwater—like walking or running—that may be too painful to be done in the clinic or on land.

The aquatic therapy programs at Rock Valley Physical Therapy allow us to focus our attention on improving your body’s function and increasing your overall quality of life. Unlike working in the clinic where pain tolerance is low and treatment is limited, working in the pool reduces pain and allows us to push your body further for a quicker, pain-free recovery.

Depending on a patient’s specific pain management needs, our aquatic therapy programs can be used on their own or in conjunction with standard, on-land clinical treatment. Some patients prefer to use aquatic therapy as the basis of their treatment, while others prefer to use both aquatic and nonaquatic treatments—it all depends on a patient’s medical needs and the intensity of their pain.

For those suffering from long-term knee pain, aquatic therapy is also an excellent option for lasting pain relief. Typically, our aquatic therapy patients can expect to be in the pool for treatment for 40 minutes, twice a week. Aquatic therapy sessions can last for four to eight weeks, however the duration and frequency of treatment can be adjusted depending on a patient’s individual needs.

Not only is aquatic therapy great for young athletes looking to recover from an injury, it’s also a good way for our geriatric patients to work on and improve their body’s mobility and function. While younger generations typically use aquatic therapy as a short-term treatment option, geriatric patients are using it as a way to return back to their normal activities and increase the quality of their lives. By improving core and hip strength, as well as focusing on balance and ankle mobility, we are able to help our older patients get back to living a pain-free, active lifestyle.
