Are Your Knees As Healthy As They Could Be?

Stephanie Kelsick, PT, CSCS, OCS

Knee pain is very common in adults, especially in women. Due to a woman’s larger hip-to-knee ratio and their tendency to hold more weight in their hips, extra strain is naturally added to their knee joints, leading to discomfort and pain.

At Rock Valley Physical Therapy we screen women and girls of all ages for improper knee alignment or other knee-related issues that could cause pain in the knee joint. Most of the patients we screen are struggling with knee pain as a result of weakened hip and core strength. Women who are looking to improve the function and mobility of their knees must first begin by improving their hip strength and surrounding muscles as well as maintaining a healthy body weight. The stronger their hip and core muscles are and the less weight the knees must hold, the less strain the knees will endure and the healthier they will be.

In addition to core strength and body weight, women’s daily routines—like infant carrying—can affect their knee’s function and overall health. Women who carry infants on a regular basis must make a conscious effort to keep a straight posture while carrying children and take breaks when necessary. Women who find themselves continuously crouching throughout the day to play with their children or to garden, should place a mat under their knees to reduce pressure and strain. While crouching is a necessary movement in life, continuous deep flection over time can result in extreme knee strain and lead to more severe knee-related issues.
