Runners Treating Runners

Publish Date: Fri, January 29, 2016 - 4:16:00

Jenelle Deatherage, PT, MPT, OCS, is a Physical Therapist and Clinic Manager of our Peoria - Glen Avenue clinic who specializes in orthopedic and sports rehabilitation with an emphasis on treating runners.

An avid runner herself, Jenelle has competed in three Olympic Trials (2000, 2004 and 2008) at the 1500m distance. After her qualifying run in 2008, Jenelle put her running goals to the side temporarily to focus on her career as a Physical Therapist, her marriage and two children.

When she ran her third marathon with her friends in 2015, they made a pact that if they all qualified, they would go to Los Angeles together for the 2016 Olympic Trials. After the race, Jenelle was the only one who qualified. Initially thinking that she wouldn’t compete at the Trials for the fourth time, Jenelle was swayed to compete by the support from her family, husband, parents and Rock Valley Physical Therapy Peoria - Knoxville Avenue Clinic Manager, Luke Acklie, PT, OCS, SCS, CSCS.

“I’m so thankful for the support I’ve received from my family and coworkers to be able to compete in my fourth Olympic Trials,” said Jenelle. “My manager gave me the opportunity to creatively use my vacation hours to get my training in during the work day—which is the only way I was able to effectively prepare for the Trails!”

Part of Jenelle’s career is working with, and treating runners each and every day. “When I ran my first marathon, I was able to truly relate to my patients,” explains Jenelle. “Running the race for myself allowed me to understand their concerns and better address their needs through Physical Therapy techniques.”

“It’s so beneficial to work with other super skilled, highly trained PTs who can teach me new techniques. Their support and knowledge have truly helped me succeed in my career, and my running. My patients also serve as a support system for me—they are runners themselves, and can help me better understand running issues, rehabilitation issues and learn new exercises to help them succeed.”

For Jenelle, this will be her last competitive race. “I don’t know my life without it,” said Jenelle. “When I’m done running, my work will keep me connected with the running community. If I can help people reach their running goals through Physical Therapy, I can live vicariously through them!"
