Rock Valley Physical Therapy Offers Fitness Class Customized for Mom Bods

Publish Date: Mon, October 23, 2017 - 10:49:00

by Stephanie Kelsick, PT, CSCS, OCS

ROCKFIT for Women developed by 3 physical therapists, specializing in Women’s Health: Beth Schweizer, Danna Herrick, and Steph Kelsick. This program offered by Rock Valley Physical Therapy in the Central Iowa region, is for women that are anxious to return to their fitness or running routine. With ROCKFIT, women can participate in a group setting to reach their goals they want to achieve and learn how to work with their bodies on progression of fitness routines. Pelvic floor physical therapists also treat one-on-one for orthopedic and pelvic dysfunction. We treat women during and after pregnancy, pelvic pain, voiding dysfunction or incontinence.

I became passionate about women’s health while studying in physical therapy school. Even then, I recognized that while there are many prenatal classes, women can feel a little lost after giving birth. There is some disconnect, and women are really missing out on educational opportunities to learn how to properly take care of their bodies.

Carrying and delivering a child is a huge job for your body—it takes a lot of work! Many women are frustrated with their postpartum bodies, but health isn’t all about weight loss and doing a million crunches to “get their pre-pregnancy body back.” However, women may not know where to turn for the right information and instruction, doing the best they can on their own and becoming discouraged or injured. Pelvic pyramid physical therapy is partly about making sure women understand how important a role they play in their own health and giving them a safe, goal-oriented environment in which to achieve their health goals.

Often, we see women who have had one or more children come in saying, “I haven’t been able to do this ever since I had children,” and we go after the causes of that restriction. This kind of treatment is something women can be empowered with that isn’t a drug or surgery (and while it often involves the pelvic pyramid muscles, it isn’t all about kegels, either!). The biggest benefit of ROCKFIT or one-on-one care is that we can offer specific exercise instruction alongside information that the general public needs to know, but often doesn’t.

It’s amazing when it clicks for women.  I have the opportunity to really educate women, not just on how to engage key muscle groups, but also why I’m having them do it. Seeing them reach their goals, and even set higher goals is incredibly rewarding—improvements that seem minimal, to a busy mom are actually a really big deal!

What especially stands out to me is that most women don’t know what they don’t know.  For example, a participant didn’t know that it wasn’t normal to get up and go to the bathroom in the middle of the night or to leak when they do jumping jacks. Just because something is common, does not mean it is normal! Especially in the 30- to 50-year-olds, having these kinds of conversations can help us find out about the base issues and prevent further dysfunction down the road.

I love what I do!  Whether treating one-on-one or the ROCKFIT program, helping women return to fitness, armed with the knowledge and tools to be “smart” strong, reduce their chances of injury and ease pain…keeping them well. Knowledge really is power!
